Zelensky Criticizes UK Flag Policy, Warns of Strain in Relations with Reform Councils
The remarks were made during an interview with *The Guardian* while Zelensky was in London for meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The issue centers on decisions taken by a number of local councils under Reform UK administration—reportedly 24 out of more than 350 in the country—to remove foreign flags from official buildings, including the Ukrainian flag. Zelensky urged that the symbol be reinstated, stating, “Sometimes little, small mistakes can break a big friendship or huge contacts.”
A Reform UK spokesperson defended the policy, describing it as appropriate while maintaining support for Ukraine, and arguing that only British national flags should be displayed on public buildings. Party representatives have previously stated that the St. George’s Cross and the Union Flag should be the only flags flown on council-controlled property, framing the removal of foreign flags as a rejection of symbolic “virtue signalling.”
Reform UK leaders have also argued that government attention should focus on domestic issues rather than symbolic displays involving foreign nations.
Zelensky, meanwhile, reiterated that continued support for Ukraine remains in the United Kingdom’s strategic interest, claiming it contributes to broader European security.
